As it is officially “Spooky Month” (as the internet likes to call it), I thought I would have a little seasonal fun and share a few experiences that have happened around our church that are, perhaps, unexplainable. Whether or not you believe in ghosts, these are some interesting happenings that we haven’t managed to find a mundane explanation for!
On the second floor of the church, we have a meeting room, and we like to light candles for the aroma and had done so during one of the meetings of the church council on a Monday evening. According to multiple accounts, the candle was blown out and most definitely extinguished.
On Wednesday that week (two days later!) when we came in for work, we could smell the candle. This was obviously surprising as we couldn’t smell it the previous day and it hadn’t been used in the meantime. Upon investigating the candle, it was burning. It’s a typical Yankee Candle, one that melts in the glass jar as it’s used, but it was barely melted, as if it was lit shortly before we arrived that morning. Obviously, no one else had been in the building before us, though the lighter had been left next to the candle. The lighter has since been moved and no one has seen fit to light the candle without our knowledge since.
In another instance, there is a ceiling fan in one of the pastor’s offices. This fan is never used. There are even windchimes hanging from it, making it somewhat dangerous to turn on. The fan itself has three settings which are controlled by a chain attached to it and is not connected to any external switches. When the sting is tugged once, the fan is put on the highest setting, two for middle and three for the lowest.
Once again, one morning upon arriving, the pastor went to unlock to door to her office and stopped as the ceiling fan was on. Not only was it on, but it was on the lowest setting, which, as I just described, takes three tugs to get to. Very few people have a key to that door and none of them were in the building or touched the door prior to her arrival.
It is an old church, and noises are to be expected in an old building, but there are some sounds that should only be possible by human action. One of those is the sound of footsteps on the floor above. Now, many times old pipes can sound like footsteps in old buildings, but due to how our building was made, there are no pipes in between floors.
This is only a small sampling of unexplained experiences that have been witnessed in our church. There are many theories on what ghost are – or if they exist – ranging from souls unable to move on, to lingering energy that manifests from time to time, or a choice to ‘visit’, as it were. No matter the theory you may ascribe to these unusual happenings, be it paranormal or mundane, they are interesting! And suffice to say, no one particularly cares to be in the building by themselves at night.
